Indian Institute of Science, one of the premier research institutes of India, is a fully residential institute. There are 15 independent hostel blocks, 5 of which are for ladies and 10 are for gents, which can house about 2300 students who stay on campus.
The hostels are nestled in lush green surroundings with open courtyards in most of them. No two hostels are alike, except for the two blocks of the newly constructed Hostel Complex: sprawling buildings that can accommodate around 900 students. The two blocks have been occupied since January 2004 and are an epitome of excellent and innovative architecture, ergonomics and engineering. They have an underground parking facility, estimated at being able to park 500 two-wheelers at a time.
Limited Accommodation for married Students' is also available on campus. There are single and double room apartments for married students to stay with their families.
Guest rooms for visiting parents of students are available. The hostel complex also houses small utility shops like bakery, laundry, cycle repair, hair cutting and pharmacy.
There are three different Mess facilities for students to choose from, depending on their tastes. The Messes cater to both Vegetarian and non-Vegetarian students.
Besides excellent rooms for students to stay, facilities like television, newspapers, geysers, cleaning, security and other facilities are also provided by the Institute. All in all, the hostel life in IISc is one of the most enviable among the student community, providing the students with a conducive atmosphere for research and learning.
